PROJECT THESIS: COMMUNITY ART CENTER

With the lack of opportunities for career advancement, high cost of living, and representation barriers of traditional art galleries, emerging and mid-career creatives often find it difficult to further develop their practice and gain interest within the community.
My goal is to design a contemporary art center that benefits post-graduates and intermediate artists by providing an affordable residency program equipped with studio facilities and professional development resources. This center will focus primarily on installation and craft disciplines to showcase immersive art while encouraging interaction with the neighbourhood through community events to sell or teach their craft.

SITE:
My thesis project is located in Markham, Ontario by the southeast corner of the Warden and Hwy 7 intersection. With a population of 353,000 people, Markham is home to many immigrants who live in a very mixed-use area of residential, office, and commercial buildings.
